Whatcha Gonna Do With That Duck?
How to move your business forward by setting goals
Everyone always talks about getting your ducks in a row. But, once you have all your ducks in a row, where are they going? Have you created a business plan for your operation? Or are you still getting your ducks in a row even though you aren’t sure where they will be going?
FamilyFarms Group provides ag business consulting in a number of areas, but one thing that we really focus on is business planning and goal setting. To be successful in farming, as with any other business, you need a business plan to follow. Just as important as identifying your goals is actually putting them on paper. This can help you in a number of ways: by reminding you regularly of what your established goals are, by getting all key owners on the same page about your business goals, and by creating a means of communicating those goals with other employees and key partners.
Remember to focus on SMART goals (so your ducks know if they are doing it right). SMART stands for Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Relevant, and Timely.
To create a farm business plan, here are some key suggestions to help you get started:
BE SPECIFIC – Your farm business plan should put your ducks on a clear, direct path with quantifiable results. Without that, you won’t know if you are meeting your goals.
BE REALISTIC – If you want your ducks to succeed, don’t ask them to fly around the world. Setting unreachable goals in your farm business plan will only de-motivate you and your employees.
BE RELEVANT – Focus on relevant and desired goals. “Sure, it would be nice…” should not qualify as a goal on your business plan.
BE TIMELY – Your ducks may get distracted, so be sure to define specific timelines for all of your goals in your farm business plan.
Still stumped? Then it’s time to work with an ag business consultant, which is just one of the many things FamilyFarms Group does. We can really whip your ducks into shape and set them on the right path to improve your farm operation.
