In our previous blog post, we looked at how farmers can get started with search engine optimization (SEO) on their sites. That article discussed the importance of finding relevant keywords and key phrases and incorporating them into your farm’s website to build a strong foundation in your SEO efforts. In this article, we’re going to look at creating a good overall experience for users and how this impacts your site’s SEO. 

 

SEO-Friendly Websites

While having the right keywords and phrases is a great foundation for your SEO efforts, it certainly isn’t the only thing to consider. Having an overall SEO-friendly website is very important in helping boost your rankings in search results!

Search engines want users to have a good experience while searching for information and exploring the websites they visit. To create that experience, search engines prioritize sites that are easy to use and have fast load times when determining which sites to include in users’ search results.

 

How to Make Your Website SEO-Friendly

  1. Remove or fix anything that slows down the speed of your site.
  2. Make sure your photos are high quality, but avoid large files that might slow down your site. JPEG images usually offer a good balance of quality and file size.
  3. Customize your image file names (alt-text) with relevant keywords.
  4. Try to incorporate video into your site. Search engines view video as quality content.
  5. Host your video on YouTube to keep your site speed up and video load times down.
  6. Keep the navigation bar and page titles clearly labeled and easy for users and search engines to navigate.
  7. Link to other websites with relevant content on your blog and encourage others to link to your articles.
  8. When writing content, write for people first, not search engines. Make sure you’re providing valuable, relevant information!
  9. Make sure your site is mobile-friendly.

 

SEO Mistakes to Avoid

Creating a page that is full of your keyword.

Search engines can tell when you’re keyword stuffing (repeatedly using keywords to try and manipulate your search ranking) and may penalize you for this practice.

 

Using a complicated URL for your pages.

Instead of using a long URL like www.examplefarm.com/about-dw04594-us-384553, use an easily digestible one, like www.examplefarm.com/about-us.

 

Adding irrelevant keywords to your website.

Make sure the keywords you’re using make sense for your site and its content. Just because a phrase has a high search volume doesn’t mean it’s relevant to the information provided on your site.

 

SEO can be difficult, but it doesn’t have to be something you break the bank to boost. If you’re feeling overwhelmed, that’s okay! Even taking small steps to boost your website’s SEO will help improve your SERP (search engine results page) ranking.
