Turning Ideas into Action – How to Take your Operation to the Next Level
Is the reason that your operation isn’t improving as quickly as you would like a lack of ideas or is it a lack of action? In essence, are you the reason that your operation isn’t innovative?
If the business owner is constantly following the next great idea (and that idea changes from week to week and even day to day), your team gets lost somewhere. Eventually, they will begin ignoring your ideas all together.
There is a lot to be said about determination and focus. Think about it; one well-executed idea is much more powerful than 10 unused concepts. Most ideas have potential, which is why we are enthralled with them to begin with. However, if something is worth the effort of thinking it through, it is probably worth the effort of putting some action behind that idea.
How many times have you attended a training session and thought about 15 great ideas that you could implement at your operation? But how many of them do you actually implement? I would wager a guess that it isn’t 15. I would even bet cold hard cash that it isn’t 5.
There is nothing wrong with having ideas that you have thought through and know that you can’t implement at this time. No small business can devote time to all of the valuable ideas that may exist out there for them. That is why it is important to evaluate these initiatives critically.
chaAsk yourself the following questions:
- How extensive is the implementation of this idea?
- Can your current team make this work or will you need to hire more people?
- Are you looking at completely changing the way you do something or doing something completely new?
- Will you need help?
- Is there enough time in the current schedule to do this?
Now, after going through all the potential questions, ask yourself “Does this idea still make sense?”. If not, put that in your future file. If so, get to implementing. There is no time like the present.
