Those in agriculture and farming are no exception, as we are seeing more and more farms creating websites to promote their businesses and services. However, there is more to a successful website than meets the eye. Sure, having an eye-catching site is nice, but having solid search engine optimization (SEO) processes in place is the key to a website’s success. 


What is search engine optimization and why do farms need to do it?

In a nutshell, SEO is the implementation of various tactics to increase the traffic to your website through search engines. SEO not only helps you reach more people; it also helps increase the quality of the traffic to your website. There really is a lot to know about SEO, so much so that there are people that build their careers around search engine optimization. There are some basic principles, however, that you can implement to give your website an SEO boost.


Keywords and Key Phrases

Keywords and key phrases are what people type into search engine platforms like Google or Bing when they’re looking for information about businesses like yours. These search terms are the foundation of successful SEO. While writing the content for your farm’s website, you want to incorporate relevant words and phrases that accurately describe your product or service so that search engines recognize that what is on your website is relevant to what your target audience is searching for.


How can I get started with SEO?

Getting started takes a little thought and research. You have to know what your target audience is searching for online to get to your business. But before you just start dumping keywords into your website, ask yourself,

  • How are people searching for the topics covered on each page?
  • What type of services or topics are they searching for?
  • What problems, issues, or conditions, prompt a search for these topics?

There might be a lot of keywords that could help draw relevant traffic to your operation. For example, if you’re looking for more landowners to work with, put yourself in their shoes and think about what search terms they might use to find farm operators. These might include organic crops, cash or flex rents, annual reporting, and yield data. When you’ve determined the most important key words or phrases for your business, incorporate them into your site where they’re most relevant.


SEO Tips for Getting Started

  • Make a list of key words and phrases you feel are relevant to your business and target audience.
  • Try using a free keyword research tool, like Google’s Keyword Planner, to see what words are being searched for the most.
  • Type in a few key words and phrases into the Google search bar and look at the “autocomplete” suggestions, as these represent commonly searched words and phrases.
  • Choose the words and phrases with the highest search volume that are most relevant to your website content.
  • Optimize your page titles and meta descriptions by including relevant keywords and phrases. (A meta description is the snippet of text you see in search results that summarizes a web page’s content.)
  • Work in several keywords and key phrases throughout the pages and content of your website.
  • Incorporate highly relevant words into paragraph or content headlines.
  • Post fresh content on a regular basis.
